As the world unlocks and we celebrate our freedom, the cost of Covid on our mental health is clear.
By the middle of 2020, one in five people in the UK was suffering from depression, twice the number in 2019, says the Office for National Statistics. As a result, there has been a spike in demand for antidepressants – prescriptions for which had already doubled in the past decade.
Even before the pandemic, criticism of antidepressants – the mainstay treatment for emotional distress for some 30 years – was growing.

Pakistani star Meera recently came forward to address her stay in a US mental hospital as well as the “mental torture” that followed.
The actor got candid with
BBC Urdu and was quoted saying, There s a lobby that s working against me, they keep slandering my character to bring shame to my stardom.
While explaining the real reason for her visit, Meera admitted, I ve been struggling with depression, and that s why I went to the hospital. However once there, they mistook me for being crazy. They even confiscated my phone.”

That s because the rugby coach turned mental health campaigner was riding a Vespa motorscooter.
The fleeting visit was part of Motorally Aotearoa, which is raising money and awareness for the Mental Health Foundation.
Twelve mates, most of them riding the classic Italian-built two-wheelers, left Cape Rēinga yesterday morning.
